Utterance and pause lengths and frequencies in oral readings by superior esophageal speakers and by normal speakers.

چکیده
The study of utterance and pause durations and their frequencies of occurrence in human speech provides important insights into pathologic conditionstional analysis of speech produced by laryngectomized individuals, in particular , is useful in evaluating progress and efficacy of esophageal speech, a most frequently employed alternative method of speech production by laryngecto-mized patients. In esophageal speech the lower respiratory system, used as a power source of sound generation in normal processes, is disconnected from the process of speech production. Instead, the patient is taught to " inject " or " swallow " air into the esophagus and to compress the trapped air within the esophageal/pharyngeal walls to set a neoglottis into vibration and create basic esophageal sound for speech (often called " belching " sound). Obviously, the quantity of air trapped within the esophagus is extremely limited. This results in much shorter and more frequent utterances, longer and more frequent pauses, slower speaking rate, and lower voice intensity than normal speech (2. 6, 7, 15, 16). Clinical experience indicates that these characteristics of speech are more prevalent among poor esophageal speakers, especially those who have just begun to learn the technique. Superior esophageal speakers, on the other hand, demonstrate more efficient use of the limited air supply as evi-denced by longer utterance lengths and Iess frequent pauses than inferior esophageal speakers. It is, therefore, of theoretical and practical interest to delineate utterance and pause length as well as the characteristics of superior esophageal speakers and to compare them with normal speakers. There are some methodological concerns related to utterance and pause analysis. Traditional analog methods of analysis (oscillographs, spectrographs, and graphic level recorders) are expensive, time-consuming and laborious, and 446

Investigating the Predominant Levels of Learning Objectives in General English Books
This study investigated nine General English books (five produced by non-native Iranian speakers and four produced by native speakers) in terms of learning objectives in Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy (2001). The aim was to find out which levels of Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy are dominant in the books. So, the contents of the books were codified based on a coding scheme designed by Razmjoo and Kazempurf...
متن کاملThe Prosody of Discourse Structure and Content in the Production of Persian EFL Learners
The present research addressed the prosodic realization of global and local text structure and content in the spoken discourse data produced by Persian EFL learners. Two newspaper articles were analyzed using Rhetorical Structure Theory. Based on these analyses, the global structure in terms of hierarchical level, the local structure in terms of the relative importance of text segments and the ...
متن کاملFormant Structure of Vowels Produced By Hindi Esophageal Speakers: A Comparative Study
Aim: To investigate the characteristics of vocal tract resonance in Hindi Esophageal Speakers. Methodology: Five normal Hindi speakers and five Hindi esophageal speakers participated in this study. They were asked to produce the three corner vowels /a/, /i/, and /u/ in the three different conditions like nonsustained, sustained and word level. The average first three formant frequencies F1, F2,...
متن کاملEnhancement of esophageal speech by injection noise rejection
Esophageal speakers, who produce a voice source by bringing about a vibration of the esophageal superior sphincter, must insufflate the esophagus with an air injection gesture before every utterance, thus creating an air reservoir to drive the vibration. The resulting noise is generally undesired by the speakers. This paper describes a method for the automatic recognition and rejection of the i...
متن کاملLexical Access in Persian Normal Speakers: Picture Naming, Verbal Fluency and Spontaneous Speech
Objectives: Lexical access is the process by which the basic conceptual, syntactical and morpho-phonological information of words are activated. Most studies of lexical access have focused on picture naming. There is hardly any previous research on other parameters of lexical access such as verbal fluency and analysis of connected speech in Persian normal participants. This study investigates t...
